Dear fellow young Indonesia, I write this letter to all of you with great hope that you are all fine. Hope you are all happy and healthy too in this very hot weather. Anyway, today I would like to share my proudest moment in my life. Specifically, I would like to share about how I found my sense of nationalism for my country, Indonesia.
Last summer I attended a summer camp in Singapore. I was there for three weeks, representing a different country, with no phone. Like any other teen, you may be miserable and I was (a little bit). Even though I made a lot of friends from nine different countries, I still felt like I lost a part of myself. This was all going on until i presented my country to 50 people from my camp. As I described my countries history, I could see in my audiences eyes their excitement and interest in my country. That’s when I realized, Why am I not as interested in my country as they are. If they are excited to learn about my country, then I should be excited as well. After the presentation, no longer was I ashamed of my country, I was now a proud Indonesian teen. As i stepped foot in Jakarta after camp, I was no longer checking my phone, I was looking at the beautiful sky and the blossoming flowers. No longer was I speaking English every time i was with friends, now i’m proudly speaking my own native language, Bahasa Indonesia.
At the end of the day, as a young Indonesian, you should be happy, proud and confident as one. Its a special ethnicity that not a lot of people inherit, so embrace it as much as you can. That’s all from me, thanks for reading my blog!
Cheers,
Ambar Widyaningrum
